South Salt Lake named ‘most walkable city’ in Utah

WalkScore.com has given South Salt Lake a walkable score of 63 out of 100, which makes it the most walkable city in Utah. Sixty-three points qualifies South Salt Lake as “somewhat walkable.”

WalkScore rankings are based on walking distance to nearby amenities, population density and number of roads. Interesting places to walk are also a factor when figuring out the walkable score -- as well as streets lined with trees and shade, outdoor dining and parks with walking paths.

Fitts Park is lined with walking paths and residents can be seen walking during all park hours.

“I really enjoy walking around this park,” said resident Ginette Rogers. She enjoys seeing the ducks and ducklings, and walks the park almost every morning and afternoon.

Communities have seen health benefits from having a higher walkable score. According to a study by the University of Utah published in the September 2008 issue of the “American Journal of Preventive Medicine,” people who live in walkable cities are healthier, and usually weigh six to 10 pounds less than those who live in cities with a lower score.

The environment is also affected by having a higher walkable score. Walking more and driving less reduces the amount of pollution from vehicles. Walking is also more cost effective than driving, according to WalkScore.

South Salt Lake has incorporated highly attractive and walkable communities into its upcoming Housing Plan and Master Plan for Central Pointe.

Beginning at Fitts Park on July 4 at 7 a.m., the city will be hosting its annual 5K run/walk. This year’s theme is “Get Moving South Salt Lake.” There will be divisions for men, women and children, and all residents are encouraged to get out and enjoy the walkability of South Salt Lake.
