Granite Park students think college and beyond
The students at Granite Park Junior High School may have a few years to think about college and careers but they are learning it is never too soon to start planning your future.
In keeping with the school’s vision, “Inspiring Students to Dream of College and Beyond” and the mission, “Getting Students College Ready Through the Implementation of AVID Strategies,” the school hosted a Career Day Sept. 8.
Each student attended two presentations from speakers representing various career paths. From airplane pilots to architects, students were able to learn what the job in which they were interested entailed from a person in that field.
“All students heard two presenters, from 8:20-9:15 a.m.,” said Whitney Watchman, school counselor. “Our school has put a high emphasis on literacy so we also asked students to write and reflect on their experience.”
Also that evening, parents were invited to the school for Parent Night. More than 100 parents were in attendance. Childcare was available for parents who needed it, as well as a bus to help with transportation. The evening was about answering questions and providing support for parents.
“It was geared toward answering questions such as ‘What is a GPA?’ ‘How can my child do well in school?’ and ‘Where can I check about how my child is doing?’” said Watchman. “It is also our goal to make sure parents feel welcome and wanted at our school.”
