Colts’ soccer not scoring goals, allowing plenty

239 days ago415 views

It sounds simple enough – score enough goals and soccer teams win games.

Cottonwood High’s girls soccer team hasn’t been that fortunate thus far, as the Colts have tallied just nine goals through their first 11 games (2-5-2). Meanwhile, Cottonwood has allowed 42goals, including eight apiece by Davis and Alta, seven to Brighton and four each to three different opponents.

Amazingly, only Kearns and Bingham have scored fewer goals among 5A schools thus far, while only Hunter, Kearns and Granger have allowed more goals.

Cottonwood opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Taylorsville on Aug. 9, but lost its next four games by a combined score of 20-3 against Davis, West, Riverton and Hillcrest. The Colts tied Herriman 2-2 on Aug. 25 before losing to Alta 8-0 on Aug. 30. Fortunately, things cooled down of late, as the Colts tied West Jordan 0-0 on Sept. 1 and edged Copper Hills 1-0 in overtime on Sept. 8.

Brooke Evans leads Cottonwood with five goals, including both scores against Herriman. Kirstine Adamson is second on the team with a pair of goals, while Holly Taylor and Sarah Taylor each have one goal, with Holly netting the game-winner five minutes into the first overtime against Copper Hills. Miranda Newsome has two shutouts in goal.

The Colts (1-3-1 Region 3) then lost at Jordan 4-1 on Sept. 13, followed by a 7-0 loss at Brighton Sept. 15.
