Families enjoy night at school
Families were invited to Lincoln Elementary on Sept. 21 to “Celebrate Lincoln Elementary,” the theme for this year’s family night, due in part to Lincoln making adequate yearly progress in the No Child Left Behind requirements.
More than 450 parents, students and staff members were in attendance, where they decorated 600 cupcakes purchased from Title 1 money, bounced in bounce houses, slid down giant inflatable slides, had their faces painted and enjoyed music provided by a DJ, all made possible by donations from South Salt Lake City.
“We are very excited we met the [No Child Left Behind] requirements, and we wanted to celebrate it--it’s a pretty big deal,” Professional Learning Specialist Alison Frye said. “We like to invite parents to come to school to have a sense of community and to be in a positive environment in the school setting, as well as have a fun, relaxing evening.”
The old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child” is taken to heart in the extended family of Lincoln Elementary students. The South Salt Lake Fire Department was on hand to show off their fire trucks and provide basic EMT information. Columbus Center Library officials spoke about library cards, utilizing the library system and other resources, and the PTA board members were recruiting new members and answering questions.
“This was a chance for our parents to become part of our school community,” school social worker George Theodore said. “We are family.”
