Year-round drinking fountain installed near Jordan Parkway
Radius Engineering, a South Salt Lake business, spent approximately $10,000 to install a water fountain designed to serve its neighbors in the local community.
The new water fountain is located on the southwest side of the company building, just steps away from the Jordan River Parkway trail at 2780 South 1042 West. The public is invited to use the fountain and get a drink of water 24 hours a day, all year long.
Radius Engineering Chief Financial Officer David Anderson said the idea to install the water fountain was inspired in part by the many company employees who enjoy using the trail during the workday.
He said the water fountain would be another amenity for people from the neighborhood out biking, walking or running.
Both Anderson and Radius Engineering President Dimitrijie Milovich are runners who have spent time using the Jordan River Parkway trail in the local community.
Anderson said a lot of thought went into the design of the fountain.
For example, the water fountain handle was placed on the north side of the fountain away from morning or afternoon sun so that anyone who touches it won’t burn their hands.
The water valve that controls the flow to the fountain was buried below the freeze line – at a depth of approximately 4 feet – to allow the fountain to stay on all year long.
Most fountains must be turned off throughout the winter so that the water lines don’t burst.
In addition, the new fountain is designed to conserve water and meets the same energy-saving specifications that are standard to the LEED Gold certified Radius Engineering building.
The segment of the Jordan River Parkway near Radius Engineering intersects with other developed trails that connect to area roads, such as Redwood Road on the west side.
On Jan. 9, South Salt Lake City Mayor Cherie Wood attended a ribbon-cutting event to mark the opening of the water fountain for use by the public.
Milovich said the company held the event to let the public know that the water fountain is there for use by anyone out enjoying the Jordan River Parkway trail.
“Our goal is to spread the word to the South Salt Lake community,” Milovich said.
