Granite Peaks gives lessons in paranormal activity
Tarot cards, distilled water and other tools of the paranormal trade are not your typical supply list when attending a class. Unless you’re enrolled in the Sixth Sense, a lesson in Psychometry. Taught since 2009 by trained psychic and medium Laurel Lowe, Sixth Sense is one of the most popular classes offered through Granite Peaks, with an average of 25 students in each session.
Lowe said psychic mediums run in her family, starting with her great-grandmother. Currently, Lowe and her nephew, Travis Hill (best known for his work with the Asylum 49 in Tooele) are using their psychic gifts to help others, while Lowe teaches others how to tap into their own abilities.
“I believe that everyone has intuitive abilities,” Lowe said. “But it’s like learning to play the piano; some will only learn to play chop sticks while others will become concert pianists. I would say I am a concert pianist but we are never really done learning what our abilities are.”
During the six week course, Lowe teaches students how to give readings to each other and open their energy centers within their bodies. One lesson involving distilled water has the students set their hands in the water then read the energy that is left behind. The class covers other aspects of the craft, like automatic writing, chakras, how to protect yourself from negative energies, and meditation. People need to have faith that what is coming into their head is true communication and not their imagination, Lowe said.
Stephen Fife has taken the class five times. He said he enjoys being in an environment with like-minded people who want to hone in on their abilities.
“This class has taught me to trust my intuition and my feelings when things happen,” Fife said. “I have been in a lot of situations when I knew something was about to happen and I was very comfortable with it.”
Fife says that this class is for anyone who has ever questioned their own abilities or who are interested in exploring them. For him, the skills he’s learned from the class have brought a sense of peace and control to his life.
“It is really gratifying for me to see the ‘wow’ in the student’s eyes when they realize they can do this,” Lowe said. “People need to be more consciously aware; there would be more peace in the world.”
Critics will believe what they want to believe until they start to question her, Lowe said. Then they usually want their own reading.
