How the crow stole the sun -- a 2 story high mural / photo Harriet Wallis

Brighton is known as a family style ski area with a laid back atmosphere. In contrast, it also has huge murals and framed original art from acclaimed, award-winning local artists.

The 2 story high mural outside the Alpine Rose base area restaurant depicts a legend told by indigenous peoples throughout the west and Alaska. The mural called “How the crow stole the sun” is a legend of creation. In the mural, the crow hold the sun in his beak as he brings the world from darkness to light and places the moon and stars and then creates fire.

The muralist, Matt Monsoon, has painted 10 new large artworks in the last 2 years to beautify public places from Logan to Boulder. His work is in Salt Lake County's new public library, Zion's Bank, Red Iguana restaurant, and many other public places. His smaller works are at the University of Utah. https://www.monsoonartworks.com/

Carolyn Keigley is a 5th generation Utahn, and her family roots go back to William and Catherine Brighton who settled the top of the canyon and gave Brighton its name. Always an artist and passionate about snow, Carolyn found her true niche when she first used pastel chalks and said the pastels felt like snow her fingers. Her large pastels celebrate the magnificent scenery of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

Her work is sold worldwide – and five of Carolyn's large fine art pastels are displayed in Brighton's humble new Lunch Room. That's where fine art meets families making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – an unusual combination where down home meets original art. Another pastel is displayed in Brighton's Blind Miner coffee shop. http://4snowart.com/

Muralist Josh Scheuerman, painter, graphic designer and photographer, livened up the massive Lunch Room wall by painting the mountain scene. His works can be seen on buildings including State of Utah, University of Utah, POWDR Corp., City Creek Mall, SLC International Airport, restaurants, cafes, industries, and hotels. And he's a snowboarder too. https://joshscheuerman.com/

Even the locker room has a mural.

The artistic spirit spins off on the lifties. They get their messages across using pens on the white boards at the base of the lifts.
