Star Wars Holiday Special Documentary Free Screening
Join us in watching the documentary, A Disturbance in the Force: How the Star Wars Holiday Special Happened and embark on how this terribly great movie was ever made.
This Giving Tuesday, November 28th at 7 pm at the Downtown Salt Lake City Library, Utah Film Center is giving the gift of the worst holiday movie ever made – grab your ugliest sweater and join in as we bring the community together for a night of exploration into how the 1978 Star Wars network special, A Disturbance in the Force wowed over 13 million viewers – but not in a good way.
It's sure to be a night to remember with a FREE film screening of the documentary, A Disturbance in the Force: How the Star Wars Holiday Special Happened featuring filmmakers Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak as they turn back the clock to investigate the origin of the Star Wars holiday special, A Disturbance in the Force -- and how out of the most terrible holiday film ever made (I mean it's pretty bad) a camp legend was born.
Stay after the screening for a post-filmmaker conversation hosted by Doug Fabrizio.
Despite Star Wars’ massive box office success, it was not the franchise juggernaut we know today. As development progressed on The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas felt he needed something to maintain his creation’s place in pop culture till the sequel was ready. The special emerged at a time when variety shows dominated primetime television, and Lucas drew upon talents more comfortable with song and dance numbers than science fiction. This behind-the-scenes tension led to the cult disaster we now know, starring Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Jefferson Starship, and, best of all, Boba Fett.
